3. Why We Process Your Data (Legal Basis)

Under the GDPR, we rely on the following legal bases:

  • Contractual Necessity: We need your email and username to create your account and let you log in.
  • Legitimate Interest: We use data to moderate the community, prevent fraud, and analyze site performance to improve smell100.

We do not sell your personal data to third parties. We only share data with trusted service providers who help us run the platform (Processors), such as:

  • Hosting Providers: (e.g., AWS, Hetzner, Vercel) to store the database.
  • Email Services: (e.g., Mailgun, SendGrid) to send password reset emails.
  • Analytics: (e.g., Plausible, Google Analytics) to count site visitors.

If data is transferred outside the European Economic Area (EEA), we ensure appropriate safeguards (like Standard Contractual Clauses) are in place.

5. Data Retention

  • Account Data: We keep your data for as long as your account is active.
  • Deleted Accounts: If you delete your account, your personal data (email, username) is removed from our live database immediately (or anonymized). Backups may retain data for a limited period (e.g., 30 days) before being overwritten.

  • Right to Access: You can ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to Rectification: You can update inaccurate data via your settings.
